On October 1, The Trust for Public Land and our partners launched a four-day park planning charrette for the Bloomingdale Trail. More than 200 community members and planners gathered to collectively dream about-and strategically plan for-the future of this former rail line. More about the Bloomingdale Trail.

During this four-day planning session, participants shared their dreams, ideas, and concerns about the trail. Some of the major themes included: different needs for bikers and pedestrians, accessibility and safety issues, art installations, access points, and interactions with neighboring business. This short video captures the process and positive energy of these community meetings.

Join our growing team of insightful and inspiring community members at our next event in December. Stay tuned for details!

Cramped Chicago

Lakefront’s parkland disguises severe shortage in many inland neighborhoods

October 09, 2011|By Blair Kamin, Tribune architecture critic

Chicago’s high-toned Latin motto, “Urbs in Horto” (City in a Garden), makes it sound as though the expansive open spaces of the city’s lakefront extend to every corner of the city.

They don’t.

Despite former Mayor Richard M. Daley’s much-ballyhooed push for new parks and playgrounds, one-half of Chicago’s 2.7 million people still live in community areas that fail to meet the city’s own modest standard: For every 1,000 people, there should be 2 acres of open space, an area roughly the size of Soldier Field’s entire playing surface.

PARIS/LUXEMBOURG, Oct 4 (Reuters) – France and Belgium will guarantee the financing of stricken bank Dexia , finance ministers pledged on Tuesday as officials prepared a rescue designed to stop its troubles from worsening the euro zone crisis.

“We are going to take action concerning our banks, and the decision taken so far is to act with a guarantee,” Belgian Finance Minister Didier Reynders said after a joint government statement that followed a 38 percent drop in the banks share price in early trading.

Brought low in recent weeks by the bank’s exposure to the euro zone’s weakest country, Greece, shares in Dexia recovered some ground after the pledge, but still stood 17 percent lower at 1050 GMT.

A lawyer and former owner of the shuttered Edgewater Hospital were charged in connection with government and its bank to collect $188 million in proceeds from fraud which resulted in the hospital’s closure, Department of Justice officials said today.

The lawyer, Frederick M. Cuppy, was charged in a 10-count indictment stemming from a criminal complaint unsealed in U.S. District Court in May 2008 against his former client and Edgewater’s former owner, Peter G. Rogan.

INTERNATIONALLY ACCLAIMED FIRM DEVELOPED MILLENIUM PARK MASTER PLAN; WILL LEAD COMMUNITY DESIGN PROCESS

They have brought Chicago the iconic architectural images for which the city is best known: Sears (Willis) Tower. The John Hancock Center. Trump Tower. They developed the Master Plan for the internationally-acclaimed Millenium Park, the Olympic Committee’s Chicago 2016 Master Plan, and designed the Chicago Riverwalk.

Now architectural powerhouse Skidmore Owings Merrill is donating its talents to Andersonville.

In a major boost for a proposed Andersonville park, Skidmore Owings Merrill has agreed to donate its services as part of a community-wide process to design a new park on the site of the abandoned Edgewater Medical Center.

According to Angel Ysaguirre, a member of the Friends of West Edgewater Park overseeing the design process, a detailed community input process has been established with Skidmore Owings Merrill to assist in the design of the park. ”We’re going to do two community-wide meetings and a design charrette,” said Ysaguirre.

Vote

Regardless of how you vote today — hopefully for the Park Referendum — thank you for voting and may your voting experience be trouble free. Should you run into any difficulty, patience and perseverance seemed to have worked well for an early and an absentee voter with whom I recently spoke. The early voter, who was using a touch screen voting machine, reported initially receiving the incorrect ballot. The absentee voter also reported receiving the incorrect ballot. In both case, based upon each voter’s account, perseverance and patience seems to have paid off since both voters reported the issues were satisfactory resolved.

Before going to the polls today – they open at 6 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. – there are a number of things we all should know. According to yesterdays press release from Attorney General Lisa Madigan’s office, Illinois voters have a number of basic rights when voting. Attorney General Madigan lists them as (1) the right to vote if we are in line when the polls close at 7 p.m. or at any other time between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Election Day (10 ILCS 5/17-1), (2) the right to receive a replacement ballot, if we make a mistake or “spoil” a paper ballot and we have not cast the ballot (10 ILCS 5/17-11), (3) the right to request assistance from anyone other than our employer, an agent of our employer, or an officer or agent of our union if we cannot read, have trouble understanding English, or are disabled (10 ILCS 5/17-14), (4) the right to take unpaid time from work to vote, but no more than two successive hours, as long as we have applied with our employer before Election Day (10 ILCS 5/17-15), and (5) the right to be free from electioneering within 100 feet of the polling place (10 ILCS 5/17-29).

Those rights place some responsibilities upon us, as well, according to William Kresse, Associate Professor at Saint Xavier University and Director of its Center for the Study of Fraud and Corruption, who describes some of them in his article on the website ChicagoNow. In it he explains we do not have the right “within polling places or within 100 feet of polling places (1) to wear an item (shirts, buttons, hats, pins, etc.) with a candidate name on it, or (2) to use a camera within a polling place (the exception being “properly credentialed media”). As he explains outside your polling station you should find at least one blue cone and that from within the polling place out to that cone is the election free zone in which there may be no electioneering.

To help protect our voting rights a number of different government commissions and offices will be monitoring the election: The Chicago Board of Election Commissioners, The Cook County State’s Attorney Office, The Illinois Attorney General Office, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Should you witness or experience any irregularities you should initially speak with the Judges of Elections at your polling place. If you are unable to resolve the issue you should contact one of the monitoring commissions and/or offices: Chicago Board of Elections Commissioners’ “Election Central” @ 312-269-7870, The Cook County State’s Attorney Office @ 312-603-7960, The Illinois Attorney General Office at 866-536-3496, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office @ 312-469-6157.

May our election be fair and free. Thank you for voting.

Mayoral Candidate Miguel del Valle Endorses West Edgewater Park
February 17, 2011 (CHICAGO)–City Clerk and mayoral candidate Miguel del Valle pledged his support for the West Edgewater Park project.

Ten years is long enough for an abandoned building to detract from a neighborhood, del Valle said. I believe the West Edgewater Area Residents know whats best for their neighborhood, and I, as mayor, will provide the support they need to carry out their plan.

The park would occupy the space once used by the Edgewater Medical Center. The center closed ten years ago, and the West Edgewater Area Residents have since advocated for an urban park in their neighborhood.

Mayoral candidate Gery Chico would help “transform the Edgewater Medical Center into a park”. In his responses to two questions dealing with developing the EMC site as a park contained in an 8 page document posted on the West Edgewater Residents (WEAR) website, Gery Chico says he would be open to making “a new Edgewater Park a reality” and thus is the first mayoral candidate to take a position on the future redevelopment of the EMC site.
