Friends of West Edgewater Park is putting on a design charrette as the next step in transforming the Edgewater Medical Center into a park.
Thanks to our strategic partner Openlands, a team from the world-renowned architecture firm of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) has volunteered to help us lead the charrette. A charrette is a series of structured community discussions to create a conceptual park design for the site. This intensive planning process gives the community an active voice in the design and utilization of the public space.
Because we are a proudly diverse community, we want to ensure that all segments are included in the design of the park. We seek your input as we try to achieve consensus and a vision that everyone can embrace. The charrette process will begin with an open community-wide meeting on Monday, June 27th from 4pm to 8pm at St. Gregory Church Social Hall (1609 W. Gregory) to give your input into what West Edgewater Park should be. Come for a few minutes or as long as you like—we are excited to hear your ideas! This meeting will allow all community residents to have a voice. Everyone is invited to come and share their park vision with the charrette team.
The team will use that input to facilitate an intensive work session on Saturday, July 9th, and share initial conceptual designs with the community at that time. We are currently recruiting team members for the charrette and hope to include youth, seniors, low-income, various ethnic communities, LGBT, and neighborhood associations in Edgewater and Andersonville. We also expect participation from the Chicago Park District, the Chicago Plan Commission, the Andersonville Chamber of Commerce and Alderman O’Connor’s office.
This is the first step in addressing the lingering question of money for the park. This is a crucial step in being able to present a proposal to private funders. It will demonstrate that we have engaged our community and we have a common vision, both of which are essential to make a park a reality.
We continue to need volunteers and financial support, so as a member of the Board of Friends of the Park, feel free to contact me directly at email@example.com or on 312.399.5700.
Best, Chris Swan
