Alderman O’Connor gave a brief introduction to the EMC Hospital and the issue of how there has been a strong effort underway to turn this property into a park.
There were various comments made by different politicians about the lack of money, both federal and state, and the current zoning status as R-3 for residential detached housing.
The main part of the discussion focused on how much was in the TIF. There is approximately $3.8 million in the fund. It appears Alderman O’Connor has spent $400,000 of the TIF. He did not reveal exactly what this was spent on. Chris Swan of WEAR is making a freedom of information request to obtain this information.
Jan Schakowsky asked about whether the $3 million could be bonded or brought up to a higher figure and another figure of $6 million was mentioned. The main difficulty appears to be in getting a real accurate figure as to how much is in the TIF that can be utilized for the procurement and demolition which supposedly has a negative value of $900,000.
Alderman O’Connor concluded by saying that FWEP needs to get the more prominent politicos, i.e. Schakowsky, to push for this. He asked all prominent politicians at the meeting to see what they could do to raise money for a park.
