Chris Swan of the West Edgewater Area Residence block group met with Alderman O’Connor during the first week of July. The alderman mentioned that the Developers would like to build a 13-Story building and present the design to the community. Since that meeting, there has been no additional information regarding this proposed building.
Chris Swan also met with Representative Harry Osterman. He is generally supportive but has not formally supported a West Edgewater Park . He, along with Jim Donovan, have also met with Representative Greg Harris who is very supportive and likes the idea of a park. Finally, Chris has also had several conversations with Senator Heather Steans who is also very supportive, but concerned about the source of funding. The alderman is the principal leader on land use issues in the city, so all the political leaders from the mayor to Barak Obama take their cue from Pat O’Connor.
In March 2010, Alderman O’Connor agreed to have the EMC property appraised. The appraisal could be used to determine some course of action such as whether or not the city or community could buy back the property.
Laurie, the assistant to the Alderman, indicated that the appraisal is due by the end of this month or the beginning of September. In addition, Alderman O’Connor was instructed by the City’s legal, zoning and community development departments that he was not to conduct any further meetings until the City’s appraisal becomes available.
There has been some talk about the Alderman orchestrating a meeting with all pertinent city officials and the community to address the EMC property. As stated previously, it is unlikely we will hear any official announcements regarding the EMC or a meeting until the appraisal is complete.
Chris also met with The Friends of the Parks, President, Erma Trantor and the Director of Neighborhood Parks, Maria Dmyterko Stone, who are absolutely supportive of the EMC park idea and believe the city should be doing more to help our project come to fruition. There group has also become our 501c3 sponsor, so that The Friends of West Edgewater Park can start collecting tax deductible funds.
